چکیده مقاله:

Background: Diabetes is a prevalent chronic disease around the world. To evaluate risk of diabetes comprehensively, we developed a score model for the risk prediction with HDL-C as a protective factor. Methods: We extracted physical examination data of 2728 individuals. The data contain 18 demographic and clinical variables. To identify the statistical significant feature variables, the backward stepwise logistic regression was used based on the data of the “exploratory population”. To ascertain the cutoff value of the selected variables, we used the Youden index. Then we assigned each variable level a score according to the estimated regression model coefficients and then calculated the individual’s total score. We gained the cutoff value for the total score through the Youden Index and stratified the total score into four levels. We employed the data of “validation population” to test the performance of the score model based on the area under the ROC curve. Results: Age, LDL-C, HDL-C, BMI, family history of diabetes, diastolic blood pressure and TCHO were selected as statistically significant variables. The diabetes risk score range varied from 0 to 17. The risk level categorized by the total score was low, middle, high and extremely high, with a score range of 0-2, 3-7, 8-12 and 13-17, respectively. Conclusions: The score model based on physical examination data is an efficient and valuable tool to evaluate and monitor the potential diabetes risk for both healthy and unhealthy people at an individual level.

Concerns about the Use of Non-high-density Lipoprotein Cholesterol as a Lipid Predictor

Introduction: Non-high-density lipoprotein (non-HDL) cholesterol is the sum of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol and very-low-density lipoprotein (VLDL) cholesterol, and is usually approximated by the total cholesterol minus HDL-cholesterol. The National Lipid Association (NLA) has advocated the use of non-HDL cholesterol as its favoured lipid predictor. Cut-off points are based on LDL ...

High-density lipoprotein cholesterol as a predictor of poor survival in patients with nasopharyngeal carcinoma

PURPOSE We aimed to assess the prognostic value of pretreatment high density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) levels in patients with nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) and investigate the possible biological effects of these lipoproteins on NPC cells in vitro. EXPERIMENTAL DESIGN We examined the prognostic value of pretreatment HDL-C levels in 2443 patients with non-metastatic NPC from three inde...

Triglyceride to high-density lipoprotein cholesterol and low-density lipoprotein cholestrol to high-density lipoprotein cholesterol ratios are predictors of cardiovascular risk in Iranian adults: Evidence from a population-based cross-sectional study

Background: The superiority of TG/HDL-C and LDL-C/HDL-C ratios in predicting  CVD risk is a matter of debates. Thus, the objective of this study was to compare TG/HDL-C and LDL-C to HDL-C ratios in predicting the risk of CVD events. Methods: In a population-based cross-sectional study, 567 representative participants aged 40 years or older were entered in the study in Babol, North of Iran. The...

cholesterol/high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, non–high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, or low-density lipoprotein particle concentration and guideline categories of low-density lipoprotein cholesterol or non–high-density lipoprotein cholesterol

International clinical practice guidelines on dyslipidemia emphasize the importance of matching the use and intensity of statin therapy with the absolute risk of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (CVD). Indeed, independent of the baseline level of dyslipidemia, patients who have entered the intervention arms of randomized clinical trials of statin therapy with similar absolute risks of CVD...
